Camberwell Dwelling

This residence was designed by SGA Design and constructed by SGA Projects, with a total floor area of 730m² and was completed in 2022.

The dwelling is located in the core area of Camberwell. The site has a significant slope, but the owners requested minimal use of stairs or ramps as they intended to retire here. As a result, the idea of constructing split-levels along the terrain was abandoned, and the entire ground floor was levelled to accommodate all the required functions.

By levelling the ground floor on the sloping site, the indoor floor at the rear of the house is raised half a level higher than the backyard, creating a slight disconnection between the indoor and outdoor spaces. To compensate for this, a 12m long courtyard was designed, inspired by the concept of a traditional Chinese Siheyuan (Enclosed Courtyard Dwelling), surrounded by various living spaces. As a result, with the addition of front and rear yards and side corridors, all seven living spaces on the ground floor offer a 360-degree view.

To further enhance the comfortable and convenient indoor-outdoor living experience, five terraces or balconies were arranged in the courtyard, outside the living room, outside the master bedrooms on the ground floor and first floor, and outside the first-floor lounge. This provides different outdoor extensions for each living space.

After creating sufficient space expansion, balustrades or fences with 6 different heights were designed based on the specific locations of each space, ensuring appropriate privacy protection between the residence and the neighbours. Whether inside the house or on the terrace, neighbouring houses or backyard cannot be seen, and each area is completely surrounded by leafy trees and blue sky, offering excellent views and an open atmosphere.
